Jarrod Blackwell, Tony Magellan, and Tony's parents, Victor and Jill, settle in to as normal a life as the new family can have when their latest addition is actually one hundred and forty years old with godlike powers of creation. In effect, they are living with an alien, which adds countless wonders — as well as risks — to their daily lives. All agree that the world as they know it will never be the same again. For their next adventure, the boys decide to include Nancy Myers, also a gifted and adventurous soul, currently with her parents at a major fisheries conference in Costa Rica. They “meet” Nancy in a shared dream, then pick her up in the craft — and promptly transport her to Jupiter’s moon, Europa, her favorite scientific interest. There they discover an entire ocean full of amazing life. Although she believes she is on the verge of mental and emotional overload, Nancy wants to see more. So her new friends agree to take her into the Root, to show her Jarrod's vast underground world. She meets Billy, the living version of an imaginary playmate Jarrod had as a young child, and then participates in two games like none she ever could have imagined. One involves telling fun, scary stories and simultaneously watching them unfold in "real" images, and the other involves attaching small gas-filled flotation balloons to themselves and diving off into the thirty-mile-deep central abyss of the Root. When they return to Costa Rica, the trio decides to include all of the conference participants in a shared dream, to show them the world of the future based upon their wanton fishing practices. It proves to be enough to cause all of them to change their minds about how they have been directing the fishing industries of their respective countries. Before the dream ends, Jarrod is kidnapped by operatives of the Iraqi government, almost freed by American soldiers — and then finally freed with Billy's help and the appearance of a Dark Thing. After some measure of calm returns, they all start trying to figure out how to come up with other ideas to make the world a better place. |

FROM PAGES 65 AND 66: The experience of descending into a
living ocean on the moon of a distant planet brought an enormous
calm to Nancy. All of her curiosity, all of her joy in discovering
new things, all of her enjoyment of life was right there in front of
her, as though it were a warmth she could feel or a smooth texture
she could touch. Without thinking, she reached out toward the
miraculous waters below. "It's the deepest ocean in the solar system," Jarrod explained quietly, almost a whisper so he didn't distract his guest. "About seventy miles straight down to the rocky core." "The pressure must be unbeliev ..." Nancy started to say as the craft slipped below the surface. Instinctively, she drew in her breath and held it. Then she realized it wasn't necessary and exhaled. Within moments, Nancy, Jarrod, and Tony began to see the nearly incomprehensible wonder of the Europan ocean. It was teeming with life! Wondrously shaped fish — from tiny to huge — were everywhere. Most glowed with some color of light. All had sleek bodies, heads, fins, and tails, and appeared somewhat similar to fish in the oceans of Earth. "We call them heavy-duty fish," Tony explained. "The cold and the pressure make them a little stockier than fish on Earth, plus their bodies are heavier to protect them more from the radiation that comes from below. Oh, and they're all right-sided, if that's the right word. Their hearts are on their right sides, not on the left like things on Earth." ... "Oh my gosh, a poison sucker," Tony gasped. "Follow it." Instantly, the craft caught up to the six-thousand-pound predator and kept pace alongside of it. Before Tony or Jarrod could explain further, the beast veered toward a slower-moving, even larger fish with skin that gave off an orange-colored glow. The victim, which resembled a small whale with very tiny fins, immediately began to dive. The predator dove down even faster — then released a cloud of poison. The victim tried to stop its dive but couldn't and was quickly enveloped. |
